ASME B31.11 - Slurry Transportation Piping Systems

Slurry transportation is the process of moving aqueous slurries of nonhazardous materials, such as coal, mineral ores, concentrates, and other solid materials, through pipelines. Slurry transportation is widely used in industries such as mining, power generation, and chemical processing. Slurry transportation has many advantages over other modes of transport, such as lower cost, higher efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.

However, slurry transportation also poses many challenges for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of piping systems. Slurry flow can cause erosion, corrosion, abrasion, and clogging of pipes and fittings. Slurry properties can vary significantly depending on the type and concentration of solids, the fluid medium, the temperature, and the pressure. Slurry behavior can be complex and nonlinear, involving phenomena such as settling, deposition, segregation, and rheology.

To address these challenges, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has developed a code for slurry transportation piping systems: ASME B31.11. This code prescribes requirements for the design, materials, construction, assembly, inspection, testing, operation, and maintenance of piping transporting aqueous slurries of nonhazardous materials. The code covers piping systems from the point of slurry intake to the point of discharge.

The code applies to both new and existing piping systems. The code does not apply to piping systems transporting hazardous materials, such as radioactive or toxic substances. The code also does not apply to piping systems transporting slurries that are not aqueous or that contain organic solvents.

The code is divided into nine chapters and four appendices. The chapters cover the following topics:

  • Chapter I: Scope and Definitions

  • Chapter II: Design Conditions and Criteria

  • Chapter III: Materials

  • Chapter IV: Components

  • Chapter V: Fabrication and Installation

  • Chapter VI: Inspection and Testing

  • Chapter VII: Operation and Maintenance

  • Chapter VIII: Quality Control

  • Chapter IX: References

The appendices provide supplementary information on the following topics:

  • Appendix A: Nonmandatory Information on Design Conditions and Criteria

  • Appendix B: Nonmandatory Information on Materials

  • Appendix C: Nonmandatory Information on Components

  • Appendix D: Nonmandatory Information on Operation and Maintenance

The code is intended to be used in conjunction with other applicable codes and standards, such as ASME B31.1 (Power Piping), ASME B31.3 (Process Piping), ASME B31.4 (Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquids and Slurries), ASME B31.8 (Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems), and ASME B31.9 (Building Services Piping).

The code is updated periodically to reflect the latest developments in slurry transportation technology and practice. The latest edition of the code was published in 2019. The code is available for purchase from the ASME website or from authorized resellers.
