Douglas Laboratories was established over 60 years ago. The professional supplement industry was smaller and less recognized. Because of his early start, Sam Lioon is known as an industry pioneer. He recognized that science supports the use of nutrients to increase the quality and length of human life. He founded Douglas Laboratories to support healthcare practitioners and their patients. From the beginning, Douglas Labs supplements and products have been designed based on solid science and top-quality ingredients.

They have always relied on scientific data to guide their formulations. Their primary focus is on understanding the relationship between nutrition and healthy aging. Their medical advisory board continues to stay abreast of new and pertinent medical studies. Because of their knowledge and studies, all of Douglas Laboratories' products are formulated with therapeutic doses and ingredients. As a company, they devote time and resources to training practitioners on protocols and individual formulations.

Douglas Laboratories joins with prestigious academic partners to study their own formulations in clinical trials. This ensures that their formulas and ingredients are scientifically and clinically reliable. This translates to products that are efficacious and produce positive outcomes for practitioners and patients.

They manufacturer their own products and adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and are National Safety Foundation (NSF) certified. Although Douglas Laboratories was founded in America it is now an international company with locations across North and South America, Asia, Europe, and Australia.

Investigation of the clinical significance of genetic alterations in gliomas requires molecular genetic analysis using samples from retrospective or prospective clinical studies. However, diagnostic tissue is often severely limited and because of fixation, paraffin-embedded tissues (PET) contain degraded DNA. Intra-operative cytological preparations (smears) archived after diagnosis may represent an additional source of clinical material for genetic analysis. In this study, tissue samples were obtained by precision microdissection of archived diagnostic smears from 20 cases (1961-1999). All samples produced polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products for the beta globin gene, but the most recent samples amplified best and gave longer amplimers. For six cases, direct comparison was made between samples microdissected from smears and the corresponding PET. Samples from smears showed improved PCR performance and similar alleles on microsatellite marker analysis. One case, with smears of uninvolved cortex and tumour tissue available for microdissection, showed allelic imbalance at 10q23 on the basis of the smear results alone. PCR products from smears were shown to be suitable for direct sequence analysis (p53 gene). A PTEN mutation, found previously in an anaplastic astrocytoma by analysis of PET, was detected in the corresponding diagnostic smear. The results of this study indicate that tissue samples microdissected from diagnostic intra-operative cytological preparations may be suitable for molecular genetic analysis of gliomas.

In line with current clinical needs, Diazyme developed homogenous assays for both Vitamin B12 and Folate, and the assays can be used with general clinical chemistry analyzers which are commonly available in all sizes of clinical laboratories. "The additions of B12 and Folate assays to Diazyme's existing homogenous Vitamin D assay provides clinical laboratories with the ability to run an important vitamin panel on their clinical chemistry analyzers". "This will dramatically improve the laboratory workflow, and make all three vitamin tests more cost effective, more user friendly, and more available to clinical labs of all sizes" said Dr. Chong Yuan, Managing Director of Diazyme Laboratories.

Diazyme Laboratories is a division of General Atomics headquartered in La Jolla, California. Diazyme uses its enzyme and antibody platform technologies to develop innovative assays for clinical and research uses with reduced costs and improved performance. Products include diagnostic blood tests for cardiac markers, diabetes, nutritional assessment, liver disease, renal disease and electrolytes. Information regarding Diazyme's enzyme technology and related products can be found on its website at

Presently, 3-D printing is being used in dental laboratories around the world. Orthodontic labs are using it to make models and aligners, and restorative labs are using it to make patterns for fixed prosthodontics, surgical guides, and complete removable dentures. According to iData Research, the U.S. prosthetics market reached over $11 billion in 2010, and will grow another $5 billion over the next five years due mainly to digital technologies. The leader of the pack in printers is the Stratasys' Object Eden260V, which won the 2013 Product Award - Top Innovative Equipment from The Dental Advisor magazine in January, and the Reader's Choice Award from Dental Lab Products in 2011 for its high accuracy (down to 6 microns), outstanding surface detail, and easy management and maintenance.

Technical Abstract: In order to initiate the development of an analytically verified Dietary Supplement Ingredient Database (DSID), nationally representative samples of 35 adult multivitamin/mineral (MVM) products were selected to estimate content of 22 nutrients and to assess variability in products commonly reported as used in the U.S. These products represent over 55% of the most commonly reported adult products according to current national market-share data. The market-share data were verified using prevalence and frequency-of-intake from two previous national surveys. Samples (n=210) were obtained in six geographic locations from various market channels proportional to estimated use. Mass merchandisers were the most common channel (36% of purchases), followed by drug stores (17%), grocery stores (16%), warehouse stores (14%), and all others (17%). Samples were analyzed by a qualified commercial laboratory using validated QC methods. Analytical results obtained were statistically evaluated to determine nutrient ranges that may be used to estimate nutrient levels for similar MVM products that have not been sampled for analysis. Since nutrient intake from foods and supplements must be combined to evaluate impact of nutrient intake on health, information in the DSID will provide more accurate estimates of supplement intake than that from use of label databases.
