macOS virtual machines set up by Parallels Desktop and other Parallels hypervisor products use the same serial number as the Mac which is running the Parallels hypervisor software. These VMs will likewise have separate Hardware UDIDs associated with them.

So what to do with these duplicate records? My recommendation is to delete them from your Jamf Pro server when you find them, especially if you do a lot of work using the API. To help with this task, a script has been developed to identify and delete unwanted duplicates. For more details, please see below the jump.

Is there a way to ignore the duplicate serial number issue? I have a VM that I am testing with and need to be able to test the API commands on this VM before pushing to production. Would change the SN on the VM but DEP was part of the test as well.

Let's say you're working for a company who has just acquired another company, and you've just imported all of the users from the acquired company's User (sys_user) table.Unfortunately, you realize just a second too late, that their user database contains some of the same people as are already in your database - for example, some executives had accounts in both services.Or maybe you were previously running the instance without enforcing number uniqueness on the incident table for some reason, and you want to change that.The first step to resolving these issues, is detecting duplicate records, based on a given field. Here's a simple script include that will do that for you:

The "javascript:" in the beginning, tells the query builder that we're going to execute some javascript inside the query, before it is evaluated. This means that it's not the javascript itself that'll be used to build the filter, but whatever the javascript returns after it has executed.Since we wrote the getDupes function so that it would take two inputs, we need to provide them.The first input is the table. Since we want results relevant to this table, we should enter the name of the table we're currently building our filter/query against. In this case, it's "sys_user".The second parameter the getDupes function accepts, is the name of the field that we're going to check for duplicates. In this case, that field name is... 'name'!Note that the field name refers to the name in the database, not the friendly name that shows up on the form!Finally, it's a good idea to add an "Order by", to sort the results by the field we're checking for duplicates, as this will make it easier to read the results if we have multiple duplicates.

There you have it! We've found at least two users who have the same name.Our function will return an array of values (in this case, email addresses) that correspond to duplicate records.As you can imagine, a simple function that returns duplicate values might have many potential uses; not the least of which, might be remediation of duplicate values.For example, rather than pushing each email address to an array and returning it, you might call another function that takes the first and last name as arguments, and builds an email address like -- then checks if any user has that email address. If so, it could add a '1', like, and check again -- and so on, until it finds an available email. It could then return that email, and set the correct value for the user record.

However, if the list has either a lot of unique values or the list is rather large, this is a bad idea. You'll notice that it can take a rather long time to open. This is because instead of reading data from the table in little chunks, it loads the data of every record in the list (or every record in the entire table if there's no filter on the list), and then sends a lot of that data to your web browser. This can put of strain on both ServiceNow, your internet connection, and your web browser if there's a lot of results.

By the end of this article, you will know everything you need to remove duplicates, count them, highlight and identify with a status. I will show some formula examples and share different tools. One of them even finds and removes duplicates in your Google Sheets on schedule! Conditional formatting will also come in handy.

Traditionally, I'll start with formulas. Their main advantage is that your original table remains intact. The formulas identify duplicates and return the result to some other place in your Google Sheets. And based on the desired outcome, different functions do the trick.

See how the table on the right is much shorter? It's because UNIQUE found and removed duplicate rows as well as their 1st occurrences from the original Google Sheets table. Only unique rows remain now.

If taking up space with another dataset is not part of your plan, you can count duplicates in Google Sheets instead (and then delete them manually). It'll take just one extra column and the COUNTIF function will help.

Let's identify all duplicates with their 1st occurrences in Google Sheets and check the total number of each berry appearing on the list. I will use the following formula in D2 and then copy it down the column:

Sometimes numbers are just not enough. Sometimes it's better to find duplicates and mark them in a status column. Again: filtering your Google Sheets data by this column later will let you remove those duplicates you no longer need.

Tip. As soon as you find these duplicates, you can filter the table by the status column. This way lets you hide repeated or unique records, and even select entire rows & delete these duplicates from your Google Sheets completely:

  • =COUNTIFS($A$2:$A$10,$A2,$B$2:$B$10,$B2,$C$2:$C$10,$C2) Then enclose that formula in IF. It checks the number of repeated rows and if it exceeds 1, the formula names the row as a duplicate: =IF(COUNTIFS($A$2:$A$10,$A2,$B$2:$B$10,$B2,$C$2:$C$10,$C2)>1,"Duplicate","")

Alas, this is as far as this tool goes. Each time you will need to deal with duplicates, you will have to run this utility manually. Also, this is all it does: delete duplicates. There's no option to process them differently.

I have a very large spreadsheet of approximately 316,000 rows. I have used the conditional formatting tool to help me find duplicates. My next step is to use the find tool and search for the duplicate records based on conditional formatting of the cell. It seems as if the duplicate tool has overlaid the cell formatting and not applied the change to the cell therefore the find tool cannot be used to locate the duplicate records. I have verified this by looking at this cell format and the text that supplied by the duplicate tool does not show up and is therefore just overlaid on the cell and not applied to it. My question is twofold one is there a way to make the overlay permanent? And secondly is there a better way to Search for duplicates in my large spreadsheet.

@Hans Vogelaar I tried that in the formatting from the duplicate tool does not apply to the cells it basically overlays the color onto the cell. If I manually apply the color to the cell then the find tool works only on the one that I manually apply the color. The find tool skips over any color that is applied by the find duplicate tool. I hope that makes sense.

I agree with using the conditional formatting to highlight all duplicates. From there you can create a new Helper column and input a 1 for all rows that show up in the filter to make it easier to identify all rows that are duplicates.

I believe I understand what you're doing; you click the dropdown box where you can select variables to be included in your filter/sort for that given column. It is there that I can see filter by colour. I have tried this on another smaller list and it works easily.Unfortunately, due to the sheer size of the file my computer always freezes and is unable to process even opening the drop down box because we have 109,749 unique values in that column. These are where the duplicate values are the utmost of importance because they actually correspond to serial numbers we intend to use.

One other way to get results without watching Excel spin for 20 minutes: You can sort the sheet by that column before doing anything else, and use a pretty simple If formula to check the values above and below to flag duplicates.
